People who have shared Inha's history: Finding Inha Times alumni

 To mark the 70th anniversary of Inha University, Inha Times planned an interview with a senior from the Inha Times in the 1980s. Let's introduce the story of the Inha Times that we hear directly from the seniors and follow in the footsteps of Inha Times, an English newspaper of Inha University.


 Inha's first English newspaper began with The Inha Herald, published on Oct. 20, 1972, and has been renamed The Inha Times since 1980, continuing its history to this day. Currently, The Inha Times publishes its spring and autumn issues in the form of magazines for seasonal newspapers, while the summer and winter issues will be published in the Inha Press.

 In this interview, I hope it will be an opportunity to find out what process Inha Times has gone through and get to know Inha Times more.

Q: Please briefly introduce yourself to Inha university students.

A: Hello, I'm Byeong-guk Kang from the 16th term of the Inha Times in the Department of Metal Engineering at Inha University.


Q: I am curious about your career or life story that you want to introduce

A: I only worked at a foreign company.

My first job was at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (M3M) in Korea, and then I worked for Johnson & Johnson, a foreign company, for 13 years

Then I worked for Abbott, a medical pharmaceutical company in the United States, as the Korean representative of its business department, and then as the Korean representative of a company called Batek, an American-based company.

Also, I was the head of the Korean business department in Siemens, Germany, but now I am working in a management position at a domestic company.


Q: Did your career at Inha Times affect your career or decide on your career path?

A: At that time, English was a big part of applying for the company.

Especially for foreign companies.

I used English a lot while I was in Inha Times, so I was able to deal with English more comfortably, so I think it helped me a lot to work for foreign companies.


About Inha Times at the time

Q: How was Inha Times operating?

A: First, I'll tell you the process of selecting student journalists.

If I put up an announcement on a school bulletin board, I took the English test first and got an interview next time.

At that time, 5 to 6 probationary reporters were recruited once a year, and after the probationary period, they become regular reporters.

There were cases where you couldn't become a regular if you didn't meet the required grade at that time because there was a credit regulation

If you go through a probationary period in the first grade, you will become a regular in the second grade.

It was operated in such a way that the third grade was the director and deputy director.

I have a funny story. Before I joined Inha Times, I wrote that I was good at speaking when I wrote a self-introduction letter.

During the interview, Inha Times director suddenly asked me to speak, so I remember screaming there once.


Q: Currently, Inha Times has four departments: Social Affairs, Culture, International, and special coverage department. I wonder what kind of department was in Inha Times at the time.

A: At that time, Inha Times was published in the form of a newspaper and divided into 1 page, 2-page, 3 page and 4 pages.

On the first page, we wrote school news because the subject was an article, and on the second page, we wrote an editorial or a professor's article because the subject was opinion, and on the third page, the subject was cultural, so we wrote mostly contributed articles.

The last page 4 is about student activities, so we wrote interviews with students or external people interviewed outside of school.


Q: Is there any article that you wrote that you remember the most or would you like to introduce?

A: I was in charge of four pages in the newspaper. Since the topic was student activities, I did a lot of interviews with students.

The most memorable article I wrote was the article I wrote after interviewing the volleyball team.

At that time, Inha University volleyball was good and popular.

I still remember the name of the volleyball player, and Choi Chun-sik, the current volleyball coach and sports commentator, and Han Jang-seok, a famous national team player with very good technique.

So, I remember interviewing those two.

Also, the cartoon series was published in Inha Times at that time, and the person who drew the cartoon quit. So I remember that I was in charge of the cartoon and drew the cartoon.


Q: When you write an article, do you have any personal focus, such as which item you choose as the topic?

A: I was in charge of student activities on page 4, so I think I focused on "FUN" when selecting items as the topic.

At that time, my generation had a lot of student movements, and there were a lot of oppression. So, I think I suggested a lot of "FUN" materials that give students a boost.


Q: I'm curious about the process of writing the article at that time.

Let me briefly introduce how the current Inha Times writes an article.

Currently, Inha Times selects the topic for each department and usually sets the topic of what became a big issue at the time and writes an outline accordingly.

After completing the feedback on the items and the outline, write the first and second rounds in Korean and receive the feedback.

And then get English correction from the English correction professor in charge, and complete the article.

After that, it will be carried out by publishing a magazine after contacting the magazine or uploading it to Inha Press, an Internet newspaper site of Inha University.

A: At that time, I went to the English newspaper every day and had meetings every day

Since it was a monthly newspaper, we have an editorial meeting at the beginning of each month, and we announce what articles we will write for each page at the beginning of the month, and if we get approval from the director, we will now cover it.

After writing the application, I received the English correction from the professor in charge.

At that time, the English correction professor at Inha Times newspaper was Professor Moran.

He's a foreign professor, and he had a lot of affection for English newspapers.

And on the other hand, he's very charismatic and very cold-hearted.

So, when I submit the draft to Professor Moran, he corrects the English, but when there is a grammar or something wrong, he drew it with a red pen and wrote "REWRITE" and wrote a compliment on a well-written article.

We wrote the article through this process.


Q: I wonder how the English newspaper was published.

A:We used to go to Samyoung Printing Office to print a newspaper at the end of the month.

The print shop prints out the articles we wrote, and it has the same compartment as a newspaper, like a large piece of paper.

We put up the printed article on the drawing paper.

This work is quite difficult because printed articles should be arranged to fit the size of the drawing paper, but there were many letters in the article, so if it didn't fit, the number of letters had to be reduced.

The area had to be arranged well to the extent that it did not damage the height.

But when I was a trainee, I didn't know such know-how, so arranging newspaper articles was the most difficult.

There were also competitions among departments. Other departments were already over, but my pride was hurt when I was wandering around because I couldn't fit in.


What was the most memorable thing while you were working for Inha Times

Q: I'd like to ask you about the hardest part, the best part, and the reason for your Inha Times activities.

A: The hardest part was arranging the articles according to the newspaper size when printing the newspaper mentioned earlier.

The amount that can fit on one side of the newspaper is limited, so it was the most difficult to calculate accurately while paying for a cut.

At that time, it was a monthly magazine that published newspapers every month, so studying and working at the same time were the hardest

My most memorable memory was that I went to leadership training.

I went to a leadership training place like Songnisan, and I remember going to each department to show off their talents and get to know each other.


The last thing I want to say

Q: Lastly, is there anything you want to say to your juniors or what you want from Inha Times?

A: After graduating from school, I still have a relationship with my seniors and juniors who worked hard and shared good memories together at Inha Times.

Even as we get older, our newspaper's flag bearer is a very close organization that always uses honorifics to our senior year, respects each other, and loves our juniors.

What I want to say to the juniors of Inha Times is that even after graduating from school, I hope that we will continue to meet at Inha Times.

Also, over time, it feels like the connection between the senior and the adjacent rider has been cut off at some point, so I hope that exchanges with the seniors and juniors will be activated.
